James Dawes Smith, 85, died Friday, August 10, 2018 at home in Savannah, GA with Carol by his side.
Jim was born September 9, 1932 in Long Beach, CA. He was predeceased by his parents Captain Hayden Henkel Smith (USN) and Mrs. Esther Brennisen Smith; his grandparents, Mr. James P. and Emma M. Smith of Springfield, MA, and Mr. Fredrick and Mamie Dawes Brennisen of Buffalo, NY; his brother, Hayden H. Smith, Jr. and his wife, Jean.
Jim's father was a career Naval Officer so the family moved from California to Great Neck, NY back to California to Springfield, MA to Chevy Chase, MD to West Springfield, MA.
Jim attended Bethesda Chevy Chase High School and graduated from West Springfield High where he was Class President his Senior year. He graduated from the University Of Massachusetts where he was a Member of QTY Fraternity, serving two years as Steward. Three important events occurred in 1954, Jim graduated from college in three Years, he went to work for IBM in Hartford, CT and most importantly married the light of his life, his High School Sweetheart, Carol Leslie Taylor.
In addition to his wife Carol, Jim leaves a son, Jeffrey H. Smith of Savannah; a daughter, Debra S. Field (Bill) of East Hampton, CT; and three Grandsons, Brian Field of Hartford, CT, and Daniel and Charles Field of East Hampton.
Jim and Carol have lived in Springfield, MA, Alexandria, VA (while Jim was in the Army helping to install the Army's first Computer in the Pentagon). They returned to IBM and lived in Hartford, Vernon and Glastonbury, CT. Jim was promoted to Product Manager at IBM's White Plains, NY HQ and they lived in Wilton, CT. After four years they returned to Hartford where Jim was an Account Manager and they lived in Glastonbury, CT. Jim had a heart attack and open heart surgery in 1991 and decided to accept an early retirement offer from IBM. They found their retirement home at the Landings on Skidaway Island in Savannah. Their son Jeffrey joined Jim and Carol in Savannah in 2005. In 2014 they all moved to Savannah Square, an Independent Living Retirement Facility in Savannah.
Jim belonged to the Jaycees (Director, VP), Exchange Club (Director, VP, President, State Director), Charter Member Glastonbury Hills Country Club (Handicap Chairman, Green Chairman, VP, President), Glastonbury ABC (Director, VP, President), Landings Club (Green Committee).
Besides his family and IBM, Jim was an avid golfer and ran three golf groups at the Landings. His other interest was the Glastonbury ABC House. This program is designed to take 7 or 8 disadvantaged boys from the New York City area and bring them to Glastonbury to attend the local high school. They live in a house with a staff of resident director, cook and tutor. Jim arranged a partnership with the Exchange Club to run an annual golf tournament with the proceeds to support the ABC House.
After his heart attack Jim felt that GOD had a plan for him and whatever will be will be. He also believed there might be a life for his soul after death and that too would be GOD's plan.
